Fires in Western Russia

Winter lingered to the north, but in west-central Russia, spring burning was underway on April 26, 2009, when the MODIS on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this image. Hundreds of fires (locations marked with red dots) were burning across the agricultural areas surrounding Moscow.

You can find Moscow if you look for the large frozen lake at the top of the center of the image (this is actually the Rybinsk Reservoir and follow the Volga River (and then Moscow Canal) south.
