May 15, 2009 - Dust Storm over Sudan

On May 7, 2009, dust hovered over central Sudan and was starting to spread to neighboring countries to the east: Eritrea and Ethiopia. The MODIS on the Terra satellite captured this image on the same day.
Opaque dust fills much of scene, particularly thick in the lower left corner of the image, but relatively clear skies prevail along the dust plume’s eastern edge. Near the country borders, the dust seems to ripple and swirl. Ethiopia's T'ana Hayk (Lake Tana) is visible on the right side of the image, but by May 11th, it too will be obscured by dust.
