South Central Alaska

Though it is nearing the end of May, there is still snow in south central Alaska. The snow lies mainly on the caps of the higher mountains; the lower elevations are green and brown with vegetation. This image was captured on May 17, 2009 by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite.

Left of center, Cook Inlet is filled with sediment, probably a mixture of tidal action and river outflow. Anchorage is at the north end of the Inlet. Denali National Park (and Mount McKinley, the highest peak in the US) lie further inland to the north. At right, the Chugach Mountains line the coast of the Gulf of Alaska, and behind them are the Wrangell Mountains.
