Ice off the coast of Baffin Island

Baffin Island is featured in this image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on July 11, 2009. Baffin Island is the largest of the islands in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is separated from Quebec, Canada by the Hudson Strait, and from Greenland by the Baffin Bay..

Even though it is July, there is still plenty of ice and snow in the region, though some of the ice has melted and/or broken up. The ice follows the swirling eddies in the water around Baffin Island, creating unusual patterns.
