Samoa

A few days before the deadly Tsunami that struck Samoa, the MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image. This image is from September 27, 2009. The red dot is the location of an active fire.

Samoa is located approximately between Hawaii and New Zealand in the Pacific Ocean. The main large islands are called Savai'i (to the west) and Upolu (to the east). There are eight small islets as well. Upolo is the main island and contains about 3/4 of the population of Samoa.

On Tuesday, September 29th local time, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake triggered a tsunami which caused significant damage and the reported deaths of up to 189 people primarily in Samoa. American Samoa and Tonga also had casualties and damage.
