Heavy Snow in Northern China

The heaviest snowfall in decades struck northern China in mid-November 2009, reported the BBC. Hardest hit was Hebei Province in eastern China, where snow collapsed buildings and iced roads, leading to 38 deaths. Four of the casualties were students crushed by collapsing school roofs.

The MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image, showing parts of Hebei and Shanxi Provinces, on November 13, 2009. The main image is false-color, which better distinguishes snow and clouds. In the false-color image, the red color corresponds to areas with snow. Clouds are white, and vegetation is bright green. If you move your mouse over the image, you'll see the same region in true-color.
