Dust Storm off West Africa

Plumes of dust blew out over the Atlantic Ocean in this image of western Africa captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on November 22, 2009. The dust appears to be blowing off of Western Sahara (top) and Mauritania (middle), though there are a few fainter plums of dust emanating from Senegal (lower middle). Large sand seas cover much of Mauritania and inland neighbor Mali. The dust may have arisen in those sand seas, or it may have arisen even farther inland, and traveled over much of the Sahara Desert.

West of Senegal are the Cape Verde Islands. The dust is being formed into wake-like patterns by its interaction with the islands.
