Fires in Northwestern India

Fires continue to burn in northwestern India in this image captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite on November 24, 2009. The fires are marked in red, and are mostly scattered on the India/Pakistan border. (Pakistan is to the west.) The smoke and haze from the fires covers the scene and butts up against the Himalayan Mountains, which act as a barrier for the haze. The skies on the other side of the mountains are clear.

The fires are likely due to agriculture. Some of the haze may be urban pollution and dust.
