Tropical Storm Nicole (16L) over Cuba

Elongated banks of ragged storm bands stretch from Mexico to the United States as the faint and disorganized eye of Tropical Storm Nicole sits above the Florida Straits, just north of Cuba, on September 29, 2010 when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer aboard the Aqua satellite captured this true-color image. In this image the circulation is poorly defined and the monsoon-like Tropical Storm is clearly dissipating.

Nicole formed as a tropical depression on September 28, about 290 km south of Havana, Cuba, moving to the north-northwest at 10 mph (17 km/hr). It was an asymmetric storm, with the strongest winds and rains located about two hundred miles to the east and southeast of the center. Torrential rain caused extensive flooding and landslides in Jamaica, where more than 300,000 residences – about 40% of the population - were reported to have lost power. According to the United Kingdom Press Association (UKPA), the confirmed death toll was five, with at least 14 more people missing.

On September 29, Nicole crossed Cuba as a Tropical Storm with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph (60 km/hr). The heavy rains washed out some roads, but also helped fill reservoirs that had become low due to recent drought conditions. By that evening, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) declared the storm “dissipated”. At 21:00 UTC, only 2 hours and 40 minutes after this image was captured, the NHC issued its final advisory on the storm, stating that Nicole had degenerated into an area of low pressure. At that time, maximum sustained winds were estimated at near 40 mph (65 km/hr).

A low pressure system with gale force winds formed off the coast of South Carolina and by the morning of September 30, the remnants of Nicole joined this system, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, floods and tornado warnings to North America. The eastern coast, from Florida to Canada was heavily soaked. In Annapolis, Maryland, over 7.8 inches of rain fell by 7:00 PM EDT, with 8-10 inches more predicted by the morning of October 1, 2010.
