New snow in the northeastern United States

On February 23, 2011, the sky over the northeastern United States cleared, revealing a fresh layer of snow blanketing thirteen states and much of eastern Canada. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Terra satellite acquired this natural-color image the same day.

Most of the snow in this image had fallen on February 21, closing schools and causing major traffic delays. Snow amounts were generally between 1 and 3 inches in southern Connecticut, 4-8 inches in New Jersey, and 2-5 inches in New York City and Long Island. In many areas, the snow was accompanied by freezing rain and sleet.

In Maryland, the storm laid snow on the ground north of a line bisecting the Chesapeake Bay, and a thin but treacherous layer of sleet and freezing rain across the south, causing widespread school and business closures. This line is clearly seen in the lower portion of the image.
