August 29, 2015 - Phytoplankton bloom in the Barents Sea

A large bank of white clouds parted as NASA’s Aqua satellite flew overhead in mid-August, 2015, revealing a dazzling display of color in the dark, cold waters of the Barents Sea. The swirling teal, turquoise and milky blues were created by a massive bloom of phytoplankton, small plant-like organisms that live year round in the Sea, but begin to reproduce in huge numbers when the combination of light, nutrients and sea temperatures are ideal. Such blooms peak in August each year in the Barents Sea.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of the bloom on August 15, 2015.
