Snow in Japan

On March 19, 2020, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Japan’s Honshu Island. Even though the day is sunny and skies are clear over northern Honshu, snow caps the higher elevations along the mountainous spine of the island. Snow often begins to fall in the mountains by late September or October and, even though weather begins to warm by March, ski resorts in parts of Honshu anticipate staying open until mid-May.
