Snow in Arizona and Utah

The high elevations of northern Arizona and southern Utah wore a blanket of snow in early January 2021. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image on January 5.

Most of the snow in this image fell in late December 2020, with skies generally remaining clear in the opening days of 2021. Snowfall in much of Utah remains lower than average according to local news media, but light snow fell on January 8 in some areas. Ski resorts in Arizona are open but are primarily using machine-groomed snow. According to Arizona Snowbowl, in Flagstaff, Arizona, the last snow at that resort was on December 7, 2020.
