Frigid temperatures gripped northeastern China throughout January 2021. According to China Plus Culture, a state-controlled media site, Beijing witnessed the lowest early-January temperatures since the turn of the 21st century with a low of -17.1˚C (1.2˚F) on January 6. The prolonged deep chill across northeastern China allowed the formation of ice across the northern portion of the Bohai Sea, as seen in this true-color image acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite on February 1.
Residents and tourists in the region have apparently been enjoying the seasonal freeze-up, especially in the port city of Dalian. Many photos published by media outlets show people walking on the ice-covered sea and children building forts of ice in this area. But sea ice is not all fun and games. On January 17 emergency responders deployed helicopters and boats to rescue 59 tourists who were trapped on an ice floe off Dalian. The group was enjoying time on the ice when the large chunk that they were standing on broke off and drifted away from land. According to a post on China Plus Culture’s Facebook page, all were recovered safely. The heavy ice has also encased fishing boats and made water travel difficult in much of the northern Bohai Sea.
