June 9, 2024 - Spring Snow on the Teton Range

It’s been a snowy spring for Wyoming’s Teton Range. Since the start of May 2024, the region has been hit with two substantial storms which left elevations about 8,000 feet with 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) of new fallen snow. Snow also fell in the valley of Jackson Hole during each storm to rack up at least 6.6 inches (16.7 cm) during the month. That’s the fourth-highest snow record for the month of May.
On June 6, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of snow atop the Teton Range. In contrast, the valley of Jackson Hole, which sits in the south section of the mountains and is surrounded by snow-topped peaks, is snow-free and filled with green vegetation.
