June 27, 2024 - Heavy Dust in Tajikistan, Uzebekistan, and Afghanistan

Dust

A severe dust storm stretched from northern Afghanistan over Tajikistan and part of Uzbekistan in late June 2024. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of an early summer dust storm on June 25.

While the exact source of the dust isn’t obvious in this image, sandy deserts fill the region. Two large deserts, the Karakum and Kyzylkum both sit close to the Amu Darya River and may have contributed to the storm. The dust is extremely thick over the feet of the snow-capped mountains—so thick that it is impossible to view the land beneath.
