June 30, 2024 - Dust from Namib Desert

Namib

Long plumes of dust streamed from the Namib Desert in late June 2024. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of the shifting sand on June 26. At that time, several dust plumes extended more than (137 miles) over the South Atlantic Ocean.

The Namib Desert stretches along the western coast of Namibia for about 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers). It also reaches inland as much as 100 miles (160 kilometers) to reach the Great Escarpment, where the land rises steeply. In the wintertime, strong winds sweep down the mountains and over the desert. Known as berg winds, these hot, dry winds often pick up fine sediments and carry them far out over the ocean.
