October 25, 2024 - Bloom in the Sea of Azov

Sea of Azov

Blue-green swirls dominated the Sea of Azov in late October 2024. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image on October 23.

The widespread color is the result of a bloom of phytoplankton, which are microscopic plant-like organisms. They live in these waters year-round in relatively small numbers and, when conditions are favorable, can grow explosively to create large floating “blooms” that can easily be seen from space. Blooms usually peak in July through August, but often occur anytime between February and November. Because the organisms thrive in warmer waters, they are less abundant in the cooler months.
