July 22, 2008 - Hurricane Fausto

Hurricane Fausto

Fausto, which started out as a tropical storm way off the Pacific coast of Mexico, gained strength to become a category 2 hurricane. The storm probably reached its maximum intensity by July 20, 2008, with its highest sustained winds near 100 mph. The MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image on the same day, showing the storm much closer to land - right off the coast of Baja Mexico.

The storm is not expected to make landfall, and, as of July 21st, was weakening out over the open ocean, about 475 miles west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas.
