Fires continue to burn in India in early May, as shown on this image, captured by the MODIS on the Terra satellite on May 1, 2009. A band of smoke and fire runs along the Himalayan Mountains in Tibet and India and there are scattered fires in India itself. All active fires are marked with red dots. Nepal is visible on the left side in this image; it is surrounded by Tibet to the north and India to the south and west.
The fires you see are likely agricultural or land management in nature. Some may be related to forest fires, as spring is the end of the dry season, when such fires are not uncommon. Fall and winter of 2008 and 2009 were unusually dry and there were several very large forest fires in this region in March.
