Smoke from Russian Fires over the Pacific Ocean

The MODIS on the Aqua satellite captured this image of smoke from Russian fires, on April 23, 2008. The smoke is a grayer, grimier color than the clouds. The fires, located south of Lake Biakal and north of the Amur River, were a likely a combination of naturally occurring and agricultural fires.

This image shows the smoke over the Pacific Ocean on April 21st. As you can see, by April 23, the smoke still remained, though it is perhaps thinner. This image shows the fires themselves on April 17th.

The tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula is visible in the top center of the image. The Kuril Islands, white in color, stretch across the image diagonally from the tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula.
