Fires in California

The MODIS on the Aqua captured this image of the continuing fires in California, on July 22, 2008. There is still a great deal of smoke in northern California from the fires, the number of which is record-breaking for this time of year. During the third week of June, so-called "dry" thunderstorms caused thousands of lightning strikes. According to the daily report from the National Interagency Fire Center, hundreds of thousands of acres of land are affected by the fires.

Some of the fires are labeled on this Earth Observatory image from July 23.
