Typhoon Jangmi

Typhoon Jangmi approached Taiwan as an exceedingly dangerous Category 4 Super Typhoon on September 28, 2008. The MODIS on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image at 10:20 a.m. local time on September 28, a few hours before the typhoon came ashore.

At the time, the storm had sustained winds of 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour or 135 knots), said the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Jangmi is well formed in this image with a distinct but cloudy eye. The storm, the strongest to hit Taiwan thus far in 2008, killed two and injured 30 as it crossed the island, said the Associated Press. Emergency operations reported that the storm had killed two, injured 61 and left two missing.
