Fires in West Africa

This image from March 17 showed fires (likely agricultural in nature) burning across West Africa. Today's image, captured by the MODIS on the Aqua satellite, shows many fires still burning in the region on April 2, 2009.

These dry season fires are concentrated in Sierra Leone, with some to the north in Guinea and some to the south in Liberia. Agricultural (and other land management) burning is common and not immediately hazardous, but it can have a major impact on air quality and human health, climate, and natural resources.
