Breezy weather lofted dust from the Gobi Desert into the air and carried it across Mongolia and China in early May 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) captured this true-color image of the storm on May 5.
The Gobi Desert stretches about 1,600 km (1,000 mi) across southern Mongolia and northwestern China. Dust storms are one of the major natural hazards of the Gobi Desert, especially in spring when dust is whipped eastward with prevailing winds. Strong storms can spread all the way to the United States, and can be hazardous to public health both in terms or air quality and visibility.
