Snow and low clouds in central Europe

Central Europe was blanketed in white from the Adriatic Sea to the Baltic Sea in late January 2017. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on January 28.

The image is centered on Hungary, which lies under a thick coat of low cloud (fog). The fog bank fills the lower elevations in seven countries. From south to north they are Serbia, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic (Czechia). Another bank of low cloud lies over parts of the Ukraine, Moldova, and Romania east of the Carpathian Mountains. Snow lies over most of the visible landmasses which are not shrouded in fog. The Baltic Sea sits in the north, while the Adriatic Sea lies in the southwest, partially covered by a bank of higher cloud.
