South Korea

Sitting on the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula between the Yellow Sea (west) and the Sea of Japan (East Sea), South Korea (Republic of Korea) encompasses an area slightly larger than the U.S. state of Indiana and slightly smaller than the state of Pennsylvania. It is home to about 51 million people.

Much of the land is mountainous, with the Taebaek Mountains in the east and the Sobaek Mountains cutting across the southern peninsula, running roughly from northeast to southwest. In the west the landscape is dominated by river basins, rolling hills and broad coastal plains. The Nakdong River pours into the Korea Strait near the southeast tip of the peninsula.

On February 2, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite captured this true-color image of a clear, chilly winter day across South Korea. White snow is scattered across the north and in the higher elevations.
