February 11, 2024 - Bushfire in Western Australia

Bushfire

Smoke from the Green Range Fire poured over the Great Australian Bight on February 8, 2024, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image.

The fire was first spotted near Venns Road in Green Range, Western Australia on February 7. By February 11 it had burnt 7,339 hectares. Several roads, including the South Coast Highway between Cheynes Beach Road and Borden-Bremer Bay Road remained closed as of February 10. On February 11, the Department of Fire and Emergency Servies (DFES) reported that the fire had been contained in a mineral earth break, and no longer presents a threat to lives and home. Heavy smoke is expected to continue as fire fighters work the fire, which is contained but not controlled.

The cause of the fire is considered to be suspicious/deliberately lit.
