A severe early winter storm slammed several Western U.S. states from November 7-8, 2024.
The hardest-hit states were Colorado and New Mexico, where heavy snowfall and white-out conditions closed roads, schools, and knocked out power in some areas across both states. White-out conditions were reported near Pueblo, Colorado while northeastern New Mexico picked up not only a Winter Storm Warning from the National Weather Service (NWS) as did the other states, but also was under a Blizzard Warning. Substantial snow accumulated in Wyoming, Montana, and northwest Kansas, where part of Route 70 was closed. High elevations in Utah and eastern Idaho accumulated some light snow from the system.
By the afternoon of November 8, Fort Garland, Colorado reported 40.7 inches (103.4 cm) of newly fallen snow, and 36.6 inches (92.2 cm) had fallen in Rociada, New Mexico, according to the Weather Channel. The nine inches (22.9 cm) that fell in Denver, Colorado exceeded the city’s average snowfall for the entire month of November (7.6 inches/19.3 cm)—with 2-4 more inches (5-10 cm) expected as the storm continues through mid-day on November 9.
The Weather Channel suggested that some locations in New Mexico may reach three-day snowfall records by the time the white stuff stops falling on November 9. For example, snow totals in Las Vegas, New Mexico were 24 inches (61 cm) by the afternoon of November 8. This exceeded their annual snowfall average of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and is only 3 inches (7.6 cm) short of their record snowfall of 27 inches (68.6 cm), which was set in 1958.
On November 7, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of fresh snowfall along the western edge of the storm as skies cleared. This image centers on the Teton Range in Wyoming (north) and the Wasatch Range in Utah (south) as skies cleared after Both ranges are part of the greater Rocky Mountains. In the east, clouds hover over Colorado’s Rocky Mountains.
