Dust filled the skies over the borders of Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan in mid-June 2024. The Moderate Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image of widespread airborne sand and dust on June 19.
The long plume appears to originate from a dry lakebed stretching over the eastern Iran and western Afghanistan border. The thick plume blows towards the south-southeast and thins as it fans over southern Pakistan.
Dust storms are the most frequent natural hazard in this region. They often originate from dry lakebed sediments along the Iran-Afghanistan border and from sandy desert in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
