April 2, 2025 - First Snow of the Season in the Andes

First Snow

An early autumn snowstorm blanketed part of the Andes Mountains in Chile and Argentina in the closing days of March 2025. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired this true-color image of bright white, freshly fallen snow on March 31.

This section of the Andes is home to several ski resorts, and the early snowfall has created excited anticipation for the coming season, which normally begins in June. With snow this early, hopes are high for the upcoming season, but it is too soon to predict if this 3-4 inch (7.6-10 cm) portends an exceptionally snowy winter.

This section of the Andes sits in Central Chile and encompasses part of Argentina on the eastern slopes. The city of Santiago, Chile can be seen as a large area of gray pixels in the upper left (northeast) section of the image. The dark, spider-like area in the southeast is a volcanic field in Argentina, including La Payunia Nature Reserve. The Reserve is home to more than 800 volcanoes.
