Dust storms off West Africa

Streamers of tan dust blew off the coast of Morocco and Western Sahara in early January 2017, stretching over the Atlantic Ocean and the Canary Islands. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this true-color image of the event on January 12.

Africa is the world’s largest source of dust to the atmosphere, contributing about 70 percent of the global total. Airborne mineral dust from the world’s deserts delivers nutrients to the land and ocean, and affects the atmosphere and climate.
