A severe winter storm swept across Greece in late January 2022, dropping a heavy blanket of white across much of the country. Athens, a city that typically sees only about 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) of snow each year received more than 3 inches (8 cm) from January 23-25, creating havoc on the roadways and cutting power to parts of the city. According to media reports, the military was called to assist thousands of people who were stranded on roadways in and near Athens during the storm, including handing out food, water and blankets. It was estimated that on January 25, about 1,200 cars still remained on the Attiki Odos, a major beltway around Athens-Piraeus metropolitan area. Flights were cancelled in both Greece and Turkey due to the widespread storm, which covered much of Greece and Turkey with substantial snow.
On January 26, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of Greece under a blanket of winter white. Athens can be seen as a large gray smudge surrounded by white snow near the eastern end of the peninsula of Attica. The island to the north is Euboea (Evia) while the large landmass to the south, which is partially covered in snow, is the Peloponnese Peninsula. A bank of heavy cloud sits on the eastern (right) edge of the image. While the mountains of Greece receive snow each winter, it is rare for Athens and many of the islands to receive more than a dusting.
