Tropical Cyclone Fili

On April 5, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Tropical Cyclone Fili as it strengthened off of northwestern New Caledonia. The fifth named storm of the 2021-2022 South Pacific cyclone season, at 0000 UTC, the center for the storm was located about 236 mi (380 km) northwest of northern New Caledonia and was carrying maximum sustained winds of 52 mph (83 km/h). The storm was moving southwards over the Coral Sea.

Tropical Cyclone Fili is expected to strengthen and pass westward of New Caledonia, but landfall is not expected. Heavy rainfall has been reported across both the Belep Islands and the largest island of New Caledonia, Grande Terre on April 5.
