September 25, 2022 - Dust over the Gulf of Aden

Gulf of Aden

A thick plume of dust blew over the Gulf of Aden on September 22, 2022. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image on that same day.

There is not an obvious source of the dust visible in this image. It most likely rises from eastern Africa, driven aloft by a small storm system located over Djibouti. Clouds from that storm are visible in the west. Some of the dust may also originate from the Arabian Peninsula, located to the north, where vast sand seas are also a frequent source of dust over the Gulf of Aden.
