October 13, 2022 - Snow in China and North Korea

Snow

Several days of stormy weather dumped a heavy layer of snow across the border of North Korea and China in early October 2022. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of a swath of fresh snowfall on October 11.

Near the center of the image, heavy snow blankets Paektu Mountain (Changbai Mountain), an active stratovolcano straddling the border between North Korea (south and east) and China (north and west). Heavy snow also sits atop the high peaks of North Korea’s Hamgyong Mountains, east of Paektu Mountain.
