October 7, 2023 - Fresh Snow in the Uinta Mountains

Uinta

A low-pressure system circulating over Utah mixed both cold Canadian air and copious moisture in early October 2023, resulting in an early snowfall to the Uinta and Wasatch Mountains in early October 2023. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a layer of fresh show on the mountains on October 5, 2023.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for parts of the Uinta Mountains above 8,000 feet from October 1 – October 3, suggesting that those areas could receive more than four to eight inches of snow, especially on south-facing slopes. Snowbird, a resort and ski lodge in nearby Wasatch Mountains, is announcing that “snow-liage” season has arrived, with vibrant fall colors with snow accumulation across the mountains. On October 2, the resort posted on X (formerly Twitter) that they had received their first 6 inches of snowfall this season. Last winter, Snowbird measured a record-breaking 838 inches 69.8 feet) of snow.
