Strong winter winds carried a broad band of dust across Afghanistan and Turkemenistan in December 2024. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this true-color image on December 12.
Dust begins to rise in Afghanistan west of the snow-capped Hindu Kush mountains and is carried westward over Turkmenistan. It appears that additional dust rises from the sand-filled Mary region of Turkmenistan. This entire region is extremely dry and filled with areas of fine sand. Dust storms are a frequent natural hazard in both countries and can occur at any time of the year.
