The mountains of Europe wore a cloak of winter white in mid-December 2024. This sweeping seasonal view of Europe was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on December 16.
In the north, a broad bank of cloud hangs over France, Luxembourg, and Germany. In contrast, clear skies to the south and west reveal snow-capped mountains while lower elevations remain snow free. An intense snowstorm crossed the region on December 15, leaving behind a layer of heavy, fresh snow, especially in the Pyrenees.
The mountains captured in this image include the Pyrenees, the Alps, and the Apennines. The Pyrenees sit in the far west of the image and separate France from Spain. The Alps form a crescent stretching from the Mediterranean coasts of Italy and France to Vienna, Austria. The section captured in this image includes part of France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Germany, and Italy. Italy’s Po Valley, rich in agriculture, nestles at the southern feet over the Alps. The Apennines stretch along the Italian Peninsula in central Italy. Snow also caps the mountains on the island of Corsica, in the Mediterranean Sea.
