Saharan Dust over the Atlantic

Wind-borne dust from the Sahara Desert pulsed off the coast of Western Africa throughout the month of August 2020. On August 28, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of a long plume of dust stretching more than 1,750 miles (2,816 km) over the Atlantic Ocean, obscuring the skies over most of the Cape Verde Islands.

This particular dust storm appeared to rise from arid, sand-filled areas in the interior of Algeria on August 25. Dust storms regularly sweep out over the Atlantic Ocean from the Sahara Desert at this time of year, sometimes blowing all the way to North and South America.
